Why Charlotte is drawing attention this fall for corporate relocation and 5 housing steps for teams

Key takeaways

  • Start with the employee's first day of work, then count backward to the day they need keys.
  • Ask for one simple monthly bill, so your finance team sees one housing number per employee.
  • Get a name and a direct phone number before move-in day.

Relocating employees to Charlotte goes smoother when HR managers and mobility coordinators follow 5 housing steps before the first day of work.

I'm Patrick Smith. I started Be Relaxed Corporate Housing in Fort Mill in 2013. The moment I plan for is this one: the offer is signed, the start date is set, and nobody has asked where the new person sleeps on night one.

Why are HR teams relocating employees to Charlotte right now?

On September 29, 2026, leaders at Daimler Truck Financial Services opened their new North American headquarters in Ballantyne. In a press release dated the same day, the company put its investment at about $7.8 million. The Governor's office, in its own release of September 29, 2026, counts 276 jobs for Mecklenburg County. It says the company is folding its Michigan and Texas offices into 60,000 square feet.

Some of those workers already hold jobs with the company in another state. A new local hire drives home after day one. A transferee has a start date and no address.

What are the 5 housing steps?

  1. Start from the first day of work. Write down the employee's first day. Then count backward to the day they need keys. In most corporate relocations, people plan the job first and the bed second. Flip that order.
  2. Ask how long they need, then leave room. Sellers push closings. Managers move start dates. Ask the employee for a best guess. Then ask your housing provider what happens when the dates change. We keep our lease terms flexible, and our minimum stay is 30 days. We wrote more about choosing 30, 60 or 90 days.
  3. Get the bill down to one number. Ask what is on the monthly bill before you book. You want one invoice your finance team can read at a glance. We send one simple monthly bill, and we have the utilities on before your employee arrives.
  4. Confirm the home is move-in ready. Ask what "furnished" means. Your employee needs sheets, towels and pots along with the couch. Our homes are furnished, connected, cleaned, before you even arrive. We stock the kitchen down to the wire whisk and the two-slice toaster.
  5. Get a name and a number. Ask who answers when the water heater quits at 9 p.m. Write the name down. At Be Relaxed, I answer the phone myself at 803-548-4663.

Where should a relocating employee live near Ballantyne?

Ballantyne sits at the south edge of Charlotte, near the South Carolina line. Fort Mill and Rock Hill are south of Charlotte on I-77, in York County.

We place people in furnished homes across Charlotte, Fort Mill and Rock Hill. Ask your employee two things before you pick: where is the office, and where do the kids go to school?

Picture an HR manager on a Thursday afternoon. Her new finance lead starts Monday. His house up north has not sold, and his family is still packing. She needs one call that ends with an address.

One call. One address.

My take

I held one job for nine years. Then I lost it. My family told me to open a housing company, so in 2013 I did.

I'm a single dad. I know what it means to need a soft landing during a hard transition, and I built Be Relaxed around that. So your employee walks in to a welcome basket. A furnished home. When the phone rings, I pick it up.

What do HR teams ask about relocating employees?

How far ahead should HR book temporary housing for a relocating employee?

Ask as soon as you have a start date. Send the date, the family size and any pets, and ask what is open. We confirm availability, then we prepare the space.

How long do relocating employees stay in temporary housing?

It depends on the home sale and the closing on the new place. In most corporate relocations, the dates move at least once, so ask about extending before you book. Our minimum stay is 30 days and our lease terms are flexible.

Can the company be billed directly for temporary housing?

Yes. Ask for one simple monthly bill sent to the company. We bill employers directly when you arrange it with us ahead of time.

Can a relocating employee bring a pet?

Most of our properties allow pets, and a non-refundable pet deposit may apply. Tell us about the pet when you ask about the home, so we can match the right place.

Is a hotel fine for the first few weeks of a relocation?

You can use a hotel for a short stay. Once the stay runs past a month, most people want a kitchen, a washer and a door they can close on the work day. That is when a furnished home fits better.
